Project Overview

When a transformer fails, it can have catastrophic consequences on the adjacent structures and may lead to a power blackout. If an existing fire did not cause the failure, the potential for a new fire resulting from the failure is extremely high.

A fire-rated barrier is installed to reduce the size of the fire risk zone and mitigate the fire risk associated with other neighbouring transformers, building structures, and site equipment.

Progressive Materials worked closely with Property Fire Maintenance to supply adequate products for structural steel protection of columns for the transformer fire wall.

The Challenges

Effective transformer firewalls must be made from materials that can withstand the intense heat and long duration of transformer oil fires. They must also be designed to meet thermal and mechanical requirements before, during, and after the fire.

Some of the challenges included:

  • Comply with the Australian Standards, specifically AS2067
  • Fit in a confined space
  • Withstand the harsh environment of the Pilbara in Western Australia

The Solutions

This fire barrier was designed to fit in a confined space and prevent exterior transformer fires from spreading to adjacent transformers or buildings thus helping to mitigate the damage of a transformer fire.

Commonly used for application to construction elements such as concrete or individual steel sections, Cafco FENDOLITE® MII is a cementitious coating designed to provide essential protection to a building structure.

Cafco FENDOLITE® MII was chosen for its use in the harsh environment of the Pilbara in Western Australia. The product can withstand the effects of the outback environment and provide essential fire protection to columns supporting a transformer fire wall.

The product was supplied and delivered to the client with minimal timeframe, allowing Property Fire Maintenance to do a fast, neat and tidy application of Promat’s Cafco FENDOLITE® MII on the colums.

Transformer Fire Wall Pilbara

A fire wall designed to fit in a confined space and prevent exterior transformer fires from spreading to adjacent transformers or buildings. Cafco FENDOLITE® MII was chosen for this project for its use in the harsh environment of the Pilbara in Western Australia. The product can withstand the effects of the outback environment and provide essential fire protection to columns supporting a transformer fire wall.
