Expanded Mesh Ceilings FAQ

What is an expanded mesh ceiling?

An expanded mesh ceiling is a suspended ceiling made from a metal sheet that has been slit and stretched to form a mesh pattern. This creates an open, textured surface that adds depth and visual interest to interiors. It is a popular alternative to exposed soffits when a modern and distinctive look is desired.

Where are expanded mesh ceilings commonly used?

They are used across commercial, transport, education, retail and leisure projects. Mesh ceilings work well in open spaces like offices, foyers, stations and shopping centres. Designers often specify them when they want to combine visual impact with functional performance.

What are the main features of an expanded mesh ceiling?

Expanded mesh ceilings are lightweight yet strong, and highly versatile. They are available in a wide range of patterns, including diamond, square, round and hexagonal profiles. They can be made in bespoke shapes and sizes to suit the layout and character of a space.

How do expanded mesh ceilings affect acoustics?

Mesh panels can include optional acoustic pads to reduce reverberation and improve comfort. The open structure helps sound pass through to the acoustic material behind. This makes them useful in busy spaces where noise control is important.

Can expanded mesh ceilings integrate lighting and services?

Yes. Cut-outs for lights, sprinklers and sensors can be included during manufacturing, as well as custom manufactured lighting and mechanical tiles. Mesh also works well with creative lighting schemes, as light can pass through or bounce off the patterned surface. Designers can use this to create subtle glow effects or dramatic shadow play.

What finishes are available for expanded mesh ceilings?

Expanded mesh ceilings are available in a full range of polyester powder-coated RAL colours. Bespoke finishes are also possible, and some collections offer rich tones like honey gold, terra copper, black and ice silver. These finishes help mesh ceilings become bold feature elements in interior design.

What are the different mesh pattern options?

There are several standard mesh patterns with varying levels of openness. Options like Celtic, Tene, Brig, Tara, Kells and Vix offer open areas ranging from about 47% to 84%. The choice of pattern affects how much light and visibility passes through the ceiling, so designers can control the balance between openness and privacy.

Are expanded mesh ceilings customisable?

Yes. Mesh tiles can be tailored to unique shapes, sizes and layouts. Designers can also choose which face of the tile is visible, as the front (A side) and back (B side) have slightly different textures. This flexibility allows architects to align the look with the space’s overall theme.

How long do expanded mesh ceilings last?

With proper installation and care, expanded mesh ceilings can last around 25 years. They are durable, low-maintenance and can be removed and reinstalled if needed, which makes them a long-term solution for commercial and public interiors.
