SAS 385 Nexus Ceiling FAQ

What is SAS 385 Nexus?

SAS 385 Nexus is a structural ceiling grid system built for data centre environments. It supports heavy loads directly from the ceiling grid, making it ideal for cable trays, HVAC, and other critical services. Its heavy-duty aluminium frame and integrated support features offer long-term performance with a service life of over 40 years.

What makes SAS 385 Nexus different from SAS 380?

While both systems are part of the Nexus structural range, SAS 385 Nexus is designed for higher load performance. It has increased strength ratings and supports greater uniform and point loads. This makes it the preferred option for projects that demand the highest levels of structural integrity in the ceiling.

How much weight can SAS 385 Nexus support?

The system is engineered to handle:

  • Safe point loads up to 4.8kN
  • Uniform loads up to 6.5kN/m²
  • Ultimate point loads up to 9.6kN
  • These figures are based on a standard 1200 x 1200mm grid. All connections are designed with a safety factor of 2, offering peace of mind for high-demand environments.

How is the system installed?

Installation follows a simple four-step process:

  1. Threaded drop rods and turnbuckles are fixed to the structure.
  2. Main runners are installed at 1200mm centres and joined with heavy-duty splices.
  3. Cross tees slide into place via removable angle splices for full adjustment.
  4. Infill tiles are laid in last, completing the system.

This method ensures flexibility during installation and easy alignment of services.

Can services be integrated?

Yes. The grid includes a continuous channel compatible with standard Unistrut fixings. This allows services to be supported either on top of or below the grid. It’s a highly adaptable system, especially for data centres with complex containment needs.

What ceiling tile options are available?

The system supports both metal and mineral fibre tiles, depending on your project’s requirements. Infill tiles can also be cut on site, helping to improve perimeter detailing and accommodate unique layouts.

What module sizes and weights are offered?

Typical sizes include:

  • 1200 x 1200mm
  • 1200 x 600mm
  • Without tiles, the grid weighs between 4.0kg/m² and 6.0kg/m². When fitted with steel tiles, the total weight ranges from 10.0kg/m² to 12.0kg/m², depending on the module.

Is SAS 385 Nexus sustainable?

Yes. It’s part of the SAS Horizon programme, which reduces embodied carbon by up to 58%. The system is made using over 90% recycled steel and complies with Cradle to Cradle material health certification. VOC emissions are low (<0.5 µg/m³), and the entire system is suitable for reuse and repurposing.

What environments is SAS 385 Nexus best suited to?

The system is purpose-built for data centres, mission-critical infrastructure, and technical spaces where structural strength and long-term performance are key. Its robust design makes it a dependable choice for global data centre installations.

What is the lifespan of SAS 385 Nexus?

With correct installation and maintenance, SAS 385 Nexus has a service life of over 40 years. It also comes with a 25-year finish warranty, offering long-term value for asset owners and specifiers.
