Project Overview

The facility sits on a 3-hectare site, with Stage 1 covering a 0.5-hectare leasehold secured from Development WA. The new building was designed by Ferguson Architects, with Western Projects as head contractor and BTG Building Services delivering the build.

Backed by a $15 million grant from the WA Government’s Investment Attraction Fund, the facility will operate as a multi-user, open-access testbed where businesses and researchers can trial clean energy technologies (including hydrogen production) in real-world industrial conditions.

Construction began in September 2025, with practical completion targeted for late 2026. In line with FEnEx CRC’s commitment to sourcing workforce and materials entirely from Western Australian companies, we supplied the EQUITONE natura facade panels as the SOLITEX EXTASANA® wall underlay.

The Challenges

Kwinana Industrial Area presents a genuinely tough environment for any facade: salt-laden coastal air, high UV exposure and proximity to heavy industry all place extra demands on durability and corrosion resistance.

As a live testbed connected to hydrogen and gas infrastructure, the building also had to meet strict fire safety requirements for its envelope. And because the architects wanted a fully concealed, monolithic facade (with no visible screws or fixings breaking up the surface) we needed a facade system that could deliver that look while still meeting structural wind load and thermal-bridging requirements under the National Construction Code, a common hurdle with rainscreen systems of this kind.

The Solutions

Progressive Materials specified and supplied EQUITONE natura panels in three tones – N252, N251 and N549 (Grey and Green) which were installed using DC Tech’s concealed fixing system for a clean, fastener-free finish. The high density, through-coloured fibre cement panel – meaning the colour runs through the full thickness of the board rather than sitting on the surface – hides cut edges and helps the cladding resist fading and weathering from UV and salt exposure over time. The panels are deemed non-combustible, making them well suited to a facility handling hydrogen and other energy feedstocks.

The standout design feature of this facade is the fixing. Paired with DC Tech’s concealed fixing system, the panels are mechanically anchored entirely from behind, with no face fixings, screws or visible brackets anywhere. That means a completely uninterrupted, seamless surface that reads as a single continuous plane from a distance. It’s a significantly cleaner, more refined result than a face-fixed system can achieve and it was exactly the crisp, architectural finish Ferguson Architects were after.

Behind the panels, SOLITEX EXTASANA® Wall underlay – a CodeMark-approved weather resistive barrier – was installed across the whole inside of the facade. It’s a non-porous monolithic membrane with Class 4 vapour permeability, so it keeps wind and driving rain out while still letting moisture trapped in the wall escape.
