Valchromat Coloured MDF

What Is Internal Colour MDF

Internal Colour MDF refers to mass-coloured fibreboard panels manufactured with colour integrated throughout the full thickness of the board, rather than applied as a surface finish. This creates a consistent material appearance across routed edges, machined profiles and exposed surfaces, making it well suited to architectural interiors and precision joinery.

Unlike conventional MDF, internal colour panels allow designers to treat the board as both substrate and finished surface. The uniform density supports CNC routing, rebating and sculpted detailing while maintaining visual continuity.

Internal Colour MDF is commonly specified for commercial interiors, feature walls, cabinetry, retail environments and public spaces where durability, dimensional stability and aesthetic refinement are required. While suitable for interior environments with controlled humidity, these panels are not intended for benchtops or areas subject to direct or prolonged contact with water.

Progressive Materials supplies Valchromat coloured MDF panels Australia-wide and provides technical guidance, specification assistance and coordinated delivery to support architectural and design-led projects.

Internal Coloured MDF FAQ

What makes Valchromat different from standard MDF?

Standard MDF is typically uniform in colour and relies on surface treatments for visual finish. Valchromat differs through its engineered composition and structural consistency.

Key characteristics include: Mass-coloured board with colour throughout the full thickness, Enhanced moisture resistance, Increased density and mechanical strength, Suitable for machining, routing and three-dimensional detailing and Clean exposed edges without additional edge banding in many applications

The result is a material that performs as both a structural substrate and a finished surface.

Where can Valchromat panels be used?

Valchromat coloured MDF panels are commonly used in interior architectural applications where both durability and design expression are required. They are widely specified for joinery, cabinetry, feature walls, shelving, reception counters and retail or hospitality interiors. Because the colour runs throughout the entire board, Valchromat can be machined and detailed while maintaining a consistent appearance across faces and edges.

Can Valchromat be supplied across Australia?

Yes. Progressive Materials supplies Valchromat panels to projects across Australia and supports architects, designers and contractors with product selection guidance, technical documentation and sample requests. Our team can assist with board formats, colour selection and supply coordination to ensure the material aligns with project requirements.

Can Valchromat be machined or routed?

Yes. Valchromat panels can be easily machined, routed, drilled and shaped using standard joinery equipment. The material performs well when creating detailed joinery, decorative panels or CNC-cut patterns. Because the board is coloured throughout its full thickness, machined edges and carved details maintain the same colour as the face of the panel, allowing exposed edges and three-dimensional designs without additional finishing.
