    Ceiling

Project Overview

Working in collaboration with Cross Design, Utopia Construction, Branko Ceilings, the ceiling concept was developed early in the design process to deliver a modern industrial feel that still reads as distinctly “Little Creatures”.

Progressive Materials supplied a SAS 800 open-cell ceiling, configured in 100 × 100 mm modules with SAS floating perimeter trim and fully integrated light channels. The system was finished in a made-to-order Rusted Crimson Red powder-coat, colour-matched specifically for the project to align with the venue’s branding and interior palette.

The Challenges

The project team needed a ceiling solution that could meet several design and site-specific challenges:

  • Wind exposure at Elizabeth Quay
The waterfront location is subject to strong Perth winds, increasing the risk of wind-lift on lightweight ceiling tiles.
  • Tight supply and installation timeframe in the CBD
Construction and fit-out programs were compressed, with limited delivery windows and coordination required between multiple trades in a busy city-centre site.
  • Complex geometry and curved trims
The ceiling layout included curves and transitions that needed to be resolved without compromising the clean, semi-exposed aesthetic.
  • Integrated lighting across individual ceiling bays
The design called for integrated light channels running within individual ceiling areas, requiring precise alignment and coordination between the ceiling grid, trims and electrical rough-in.
  • Exact colour and finish requirements
The design intent relied on a specific custom powder-coat colour that needed to be accurately matched and consistently applied across all visible components.
  • Maintaining a modern industrial look
The finished space needed to feel refined and contemporary while still conveying a lightly industrial DNA suited to a busy hospitality venue and corporate CBD audience.

The Solutions

To address these requirements, we worked with the team from an early stage to engineer a complete ceiling and trim package:

  • SAS 800 open-cell ceiling (100 × 100 mm)
The SAS 800 system was selected to provide a sharp, modern industrial look with clear sightlines and depth when viewed from below. The 100 × 100 mm module size delivers strong visual rhythm while allowing services and lighting to be carefully coordinated within the grid.
  • Custom brackets for wind-lift resistance
A project-specific bracket solution was developed to hold the tiles securely in place and mitigate wind-lift, while retaining the open-cell appearance and avoiding bulky visible fixings. The system was designed specifically for the wind conditions typical of the Elizabeth Quay waterfront.
  • SAS floating perimeter trim and curved elements
SAS floating perimeter trims were detailed to create a clean border between the open-cell ceiling and adjacent surfaces. Where the architecture called for curves, trims were custom formed, maintaining consistent edge lines and shadow gaps.
  • Integrated light channels
Ceiling layouts were coordinated with the lighting design so custom lighting could be integrated directly into the SAS 800 grid. This was particularly important where lighting ran through individual ceiling bays, requiring careful planning of tile edges, suspension points and power feeds to maintain a seamless appearance.
  • Custom Rusted Crimson Red powder-coat
All visible metal components, including tiles and trims, were finished in a custom powder-coated Rusted Crimson Red., A controlled colour-matching process ensured the final result aligned with the architect’s specification and the client’s branding expectations.
  • Early design engagement for cost-effective delivery
By involving Progressive Materials early, the team could resolve details up front, avoid late design changes and coordinate structure, services and finishes. This early engagement contributed to a more cost-effective package and supported the tight delivery timeframe in the CBD environment.

Conclusion

The Little Creatures Elizabeth Quay project demonstrates how collaborative design and a carefully engineered SAS ceiling solution can deliver both performance and visual impact in a high-profile hospitality venue.

Through custom brackets, curved trims, integrated lighting zones and a bespoke colour, Progressive Materials helped realise a ceiling that is robust enough for Perth’s waterfront conditions, flexible enough to coordinate with complex services, and refined enough to suit the venue’s modern industrial brief.

The result is a distinctive ceiling feature that supports the venue’s identity, enhances the guest experience and showcases Progressive Materials’ ability to deliver tailored SAS International metal ceiling solutions on demanding, design-driven projects.
