Project Overview

A defining element of the design by Woods Bagot is the SAS 200 Bronze Mirror Ripple Effect ceiling, which introduces warmth and visual depth through its reflective bronze finish and subtle ripple texture. As passengers move through the space, the ceiling softly responds to light and motion, elevating what is traditionally a transient zone into a considered and engaging architectural experience.

Specified and supplied by Progressive Materials and installed by BTG Construction Services, the ceiling system also meets the functional demands of a major airport environment, offering durability, service accessibility, and long-term performance without compromising on design intent.

The Challenges

Designing within a live airport terminal presents unique challenges. Passenger waiting areas must accommodate constant foot traffic, strict operational requirements, and ongoing access to building services, all while maintaining a calm and premium atmosphere. In addition, the ceiling design needed to contribute architectural impact without creating visual clutter or glare that could detract from passenger comfort.

Coordination across multiple trades was also critical, with tight installation tolerances and sequencing required to align with airport programming and minimise disruption to operations.

The Solutions

The SAS International SAS 200 metal ceiling system provided a robust and flexible solution well suited to the demands of the environment. Its modular construction allows for efficient access to services above the ceiling, supporting ongoing maintenance within an active terminal. The bronze mirror ripple finish delivers visual interest and warmth, while carefully controlling reflections to enhance, rather than overwhelm, the space.

Progressive Materials worked closely with the project team to ensure the system was fully specification-ready, supporting design intent while addressing performance and compliance requirements.

Through precise installation by BTG Construction Services, the result is a ceiling solution that seamlessly integrates form and function, helping create a welcoming, high-quality space where passengers can relax before their journey begins.
