Project Overview

Relay is a dynamic newsstand concept designed to meet the needs of busy travellers at Perth Airport. Stocking everything from the latest newspapers, books and magazines through to stationery, confectionery and a dedicated tech accessories range, it’s a ones top shop for passengers on the move.

This fitout presented a clear brief: create a retail environment designed to handle constant movement while maintaining clarity, visual flow and a strong, cohesive identity. From the metal ceilings plane through to custom fixtures, every element of this space has been engineered to perform in a demanding, high traffic setting, where durability, aesthetics and functionality must all coexist without compromise.

The Challenges

Airport retail environments demand a ceiling solution that goes well beyond visual appeal. The system needed to meet strict practical requirements. Most importantly, the ability to allow adequate light transmission to the shop floor below while maintaining a clean, uninterrupted ceiling line from the passenger’s perspective.

Equally important was service accessibility. The ceiling needed to provide straightforward access to the plenum space above for mechanical, electrical and other building services. This is a non negotiable requirement in a live airport environment where maintenance must be carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption to the retail operation.

Alongside these functional demands, the design team required a product that could work within the broader visual language of the fitout, a refined, contemporary aesthetic that reinforced brand identity and created a sense of place within the terminal’s retail offering.

The Solutions

The SAS International SAS740 Metal Linear Ceiling System was the natural choice for this application. Its open linear baton profile allows light to pass freely through the ceiling plane, ensuring adequate illumination at the shop floor level without the need for recessed apertures or compromised aesthetics.

The system’s demountable design means individual batons can be removed and replaced with ease, providing unrestricted access to the services void above – ideal for the ongoing maintenance requirements of a busy airport retail environment. This is a ceiling built not just to look the part on day one, but to continue performing reliably for years to come.

Specified in white, the SAS740 delivers a clean, bright ceiling plane that amplifies the ambient light within the space, reinforcing the sense of openness and clarity that is central to the design intent. The linear profile adds a subtle directionality that draws the eye through the retail environment, supporting customer flow and wayfinding without the need for additional architectural intervention.

Progressive Materials was a part of the project, from early specification support and product selection through to supply and technical assistance, ensuring smooth delivery within the constraints of an operational airport environment.
