Expanded Mesh Ceilings

SAS MESH CEILINGS

Whether driven by aesthetic needs or smoke extraction requirements, SAS mesh is an increasingly popular tile option.

Product Applications

1 Application Type

SAS has been manufacturing expanded metalwork for decades and recently launched a new range of metal mesh ceiling options. In order of appearance (right) the SAS Mesh Ceilings options are Celtic, Tene, Brig, Tara, Kells and Vix.

Specified for its texture and pattern, the main features of SAS International expanded mesh panels include:

  • Compatible with multiple SAS systems
  • Available in six new patterns and the full range of RAL colours
  • Incorporates M&E services and complex building layouts
  • Adjustable to bespoke designs

Compatible Systems

Systems compatible with SAS mesh are:

Shape and Design

Expanded Mesh can be designed in a wide range of patterns including round, square, diamond and hexagonal designs.

For best results, mesh should be specified with the long-way pattern direction across the tile width to maximise the strength of the material. Specification considerations for mesh include:

  • Visible face (‘A’ face as standard)
  • Open view orientation
  • Longway direction (across width as standard)
  • Pattern selection
  • Finishes and integration requirements

Texture

The mesh manufacture process results in the material having a different appearance depending on which face is visible. Tiles are manufactured with the “A Face” visible as standard but if desired the “B face” could be specified as the finished face.  The “A” side of the tile is smoother with more gentle curves while the “B” side has a more pronounced texture. Depending on aesthetic preference, specifiers will need to choose their preferred visible face.

SAS Mesh Ceiling FAQ

What is a SAS mesh ceiling?

A SAS mesh ceiling is a metal ceiling made from expanded mesh panels that provide you with multiple grid options, including exposed and concealed grid. The panels fit into a suspended frame, giving a lightweight and open look. These ceilings work well in modern offices, shops, and public spaces where you need good airflow and an industrial look.

What are the benefits of using a mesh ceiling system?

Mesh ceilings create a unique, open feel while limiting the view of pipes, wires, and ductwork. They help with airflow and ventilation and reduce the visual bulk of the ceiling. The expanded mesh texture gives a stylish industrial finish that works well in design-led spaces. You can choose different mesh patterns and colours to suit your design.

Where are SAS mesh ceilings used in Perth and across Australia?

Architects and builders use expanded mesh in Perth and other major cities for offices, lobbies, stations, and shopping centres. The panels are light and easy to fit, which makes them a smart choice for ceilings that need to look good, let air flow, and allow quick access above.

How is a SAS mesh ceiling different from a solid panel ceiling like SAS150?

Unlike solid metal systems like SAS150, mesh ceilings have an open structure. This allows light and air to pass through and gives a more modern or architectural look. While SAS150 focuses on smooth finishes and acoustic control, mesh ceilings focus on visibility, ventilation, and design impact.

What mesh textures and finishes are available?

You can choose from different expanded mesh textures based on the look you want – from fine to heavy gauge. Mesh panels come in powder-coated colours and can match other fittings in your space. Custom finishes and shapes are also available depending on your project needs.

Are mesh ceilings easy to install and maintain?

Yes. Installers fix the mesh panels into a visible or concealed grid system. The panels are lightweight and easy to remove, so you can get to services above the ceiling quickly. Mesh ceilings require minimal maintenance and perform reliably in busy environments.

Can you fit lights or services into a SAS mesh ceiling?

Yes. You can mount lights, speakers, or sensors above or behind the mesh to create a layered effect. You can also add feature lighting through the grid for a bold look. Hang heavy items by fixing them to the structure above, not to the mesh ceiling itself.

Do SAS mesh ceilings meet Australian standards?

Yes. All SAS mesh ceiling systems meet Australian safety, fire, and durability standards. These ceilings meet Australian standards and suit projects that follow the National Construction Code for public and commercial buildings.
