Project Overview

As part of these major public infrastructure works, high-performance passive fire protection systems were specified by Progressive Materials in conjunction with Hames Sharley and the project JV to safeguard critical structural elements, services penetrations and occupied public areas.

Progressive Materials supplied a comprehensive suite of Promat systems across both stations, delivering several thousand square metres of tested, compliant fire protection products.

Both METRONET Byford & Armadale Train Stations required system-based Promat passive fire protection capable of meeting stringent Fire Resistance Level (FRL) requirements across walls, floor/ceiling assemblies and service penetrations in a high-traffic transport environment.

Products supplied by Progressive Materials:

These systems formed part of an integrated passive fire protection strategy designed to compartmentalise fire, protect structural integrity and maintain safe egress pathways within busy public transport facilities.

The Challenges

Public Infrastructure Compliance

Train stations fall within stringent compliance frameworks, requiring tested systems (not standalone products) that align with Australian Standards and documented FRL performance.

High Service Density

Transport hubs incorporate extensive mechanical, electrical and data infrastructure. Coordinating fire-rated walls and load-bearing floor/ceiling systems alongside numerous penetrations required careful system selection and detailing.

Load & Durability Requirements

Service zones and plant areas required trafficable, load-bearing fire-rated systems capable of long-term performance under maintenance access and operational demands.

Program & Scale

With several thousand square metres installed across two locations, consistency in supply, documentation and technical coordination was critical to maintaining construction timelines.

Metronet Byford and Armadale Train Station

The Solutions

A coordinated, system-based passive fire protection strategy was delivered across the Byford and Armadale Train Stations to meet compliance and long-term performance requirements within a high-traffic transport environment.

Promat systems were selected to ensure compatibility between walls, floor/ceiling assemblies and penetrations, maintaining continuous fire compartmentation. PROMAT Systempanel FR provided a 2-way load bearing, trafficable solution for service areas, while PROMASEAL Collars, PROMASEAL Bulkhead Batt and PROMASEAL SupaWrap were used to treat service penetrations in tested configurations.

Installation was carried out by the experienced contractor, Top End Ceilings, with Progressive Materials providing coordinated supply and technical support aligned with METRONET standards.

The outcome: certified FRL compliance, durable load-bearing assemblies and consistent penetration sealing across both sites.
