SAS 380 Nexus Ceiling FAQ

What is SAS 380 Nexus?

SAS 380 Nexus is a structural ceiling grid system designed to support heavy services in data centres. It combines a robust aluminium grid with optional steel ceiling tiles to offer both load-bearing capability and clean design. The system is engineered for long-term performance and can last over 40 years with minimal maintenance.

What makes SAS 380 Nexus suitable for data centres?

It’s purpose-built for supporting large, heavy equipment like cable trays and containment systems directly on the ceiling grid. The grid includes a continuous channel compatible with standard Unistrut fixings, so services can be mounted either on top of or beneath the system. This makes it ideal for data centres where flexibility and service load are essential.

How much weight can the SAS 380 Nexus system hold?

The grid offers impressive load capacity:

  • Safe point load: up to 2.0kN
  • Uniform load: up to 2.75kN/m²
  • Ultimate point load: up to 3.6kN
  • This means it can safely handle large-scale containment, trunking and lighting without needing extra structural support.

How is the ceiling installed?

The system uses M10 threaded rods and turnbuckles to suspend the grid from the building’s structure. Main runners are installed at 1200mm centres, then joined using heavy-duty straight splice connectors. Cross tees attach via removable angle splices, which allow quick, on-site adjustment. Infill tiles are then installed to complete the ceiling.

Are different grid layouts possible?

Yes. SAS 380 Nexus is available in multiple grid configurations depending on the service layout or design of your data centre. Components like cross tees and splices are designed for flexibility and lateral stability, making it easy to tailor the layout without compromising strength.

Can I integrate services and lighting into this system?

Absolutely. The continuous channel on the main runners accepts standard Unistrut fixings, so trays, lights, sensors and other services can be mounted directly. Depending on your preference, services can either rest on top of the grid or hang below it.

What sizes and weights are available?

The most common module sizes are:

  • 1200 x 1200mm
  • 1200 x 600mm
  • With steel infill tiles, system weight ranges from 10.0kg/m² to 11.5kg/m². Without tiles, the grid alone weighs between 3.0kg/m² and 4.5kg/m².

What finishes and sustainability credentials does it offer?

SAS 380 Nexus is finished in RAL 9010 as standard and is fully Cradle to Cradle Certified at Bronze level. It’s also part of the SAS Horizon programme, which reduces embodied carbon by over 50%. With more than 90% recycled steel and low VOC emissions, it’s one of the most sustainable grid systems available.

What kind of lifespan can I expect?

The system offers a 40-year service life, with a 25-year finish warranty. Its strength and long-term structural integrity make it a future-proof option for mission-critical infrastructure.

What are some example projects using this system?

SAS 380 Nexus is a specialised product for high-performance environments, particularly data centres. While specific project names are not listed, its engineering credentials make it a trusted solution in global data centre designs.
