Key Insights
Valchromat is a through coloured MDF panel designed for interior applications where the material itself becomes the finish.
The result is a mass coloured MDF board with consistent colour throughout the full thickness of the panel, including edges, cut faces and machined details. For architects and interior designers, this fundamentally changes how coloured MDF panels can be specified and detailed across commercial interiors.
Valchromat is now supplied Australia wide by Progressive Materials.
A Different Approach to Coloured MDF
Traditional MDF is typically used as a substrate. It requires laminates, veneers or paint systems to achieve a finished look, and exposed edges often need additional treatment.
Valchromat takes a different approach. As a through coloured MDF, there is no surface layer. The colour is integral to the board, meaning routed details, rebates and exposed edges maintain a consistent finish without the need for edge banding.
This makes it a strong option for projects where material honesty and clean detailing are critical, particularly across architectural joinery.
How Valchromat is Made
Valchromat is produced by combining wood fibres that have been individually dyed with a specialised resin system. This process creates a dense and cohesive panel with enhanced physical and mechanical properties compared to standard MDF.
Because the colour is embedded during manufacturing, the panel maintains visual consistency even after cutting, drilling or machining. This is what defines Valchromat as a true mass coloured MDF rather than a surface-applied product.
Key Characteristics
Valchromat is positioned as a design-ready decorative MDF panel, offering a combination of performance and flexibility:
- Colour throughout thickness – Ideal for exposed edges, routing and detailed joinery
- Moisture resistant (MDF.HLS) – Suitable for interior environments where humidity is a factor, when properly sealed
- High density and strength – Improved internal bond and bending performance compared to standard MDF
- Excellent machinability – Supports precise cutting, CNC routing and complex three-dimensional detailing
- Supplied unfinished – Requires protective finishing such as oil, wax or varnish depending on the application
These properties allow Valchromat to move beyond typical decorative MDF panels, enabling it to function as both structure and finish.
Where Valchromat is Used
Valchromat is commonly specified by Progressive Materials across commercial and architectural interiors where durability, detail and visual consistency are required.
Typical applications include:
Why Architects and Designers Are Using It
What we keep hearing is that there is a clear shift across commercial interiors towards materials that act as the finished surface, rather than relying on applied layers.
Valchromat aligns with this approach which is why we are excited to now have it as part of the Progressive Materials Portfolio. As an architectural coloured MDF, it simplifies the material palette while still allowing variation through colour, machining and form. Designers can achieve depth and complexity through detailing rather than additional finishes.
It also supports a more resolved outcome on site. With fewer applied layers, there is less reliance on secondary trades and less risk of inconsistencies between surfaces and edges.
Specifying Valchromat in Australia
When specifying Valchromat, it’s important to consider the full system, not just the board itself.
As the panels are supplied unfinished, the final appearance and performance depend on the selected sealing or finishing system. This should be aligned with the intended application, particularly in areas exposed to wear or moisture.
Early coordination is also key. Because Valchromat is often used for detailed joinery and feature elements, engaging early ensures the right panel type, thickness and finish are selected to suit the design intent.
With Progressive Materials supporting projects across Australia through specification guidance, local stock and national supply, teams can align design intent with product selection and delivery from the outset.
